CanadaVille

I'm in the middle of watching a very interesting documentary on CTV's W-FIVE called CanadaVille. It deals with the development of a community created after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. It's an interesting observation of human nature and the huge cultural difference between Canada and the southern states.

Can a small conservative town accept refugees from New Orleans, a city they associate with crime and poverty? Can the people from the city adjust to small town life? Can the predominantly white townspeople accept the black neighbours arriving?

Sadly, it seems things do not go well. Ironically, in separate interviews with original residents and the new arrivals of CanadaVille, both communities repeatedly said that they did not feel "safe" with the other group. Even though it's 2007, society still has a long way to go. We may have mastered technology, but communication is another story.
